As someone who's lived in small spaces my whole life, I’ve learned a thing or two about making the most out of limited square footage. Sure, having a big home with endless design possibilities sounds great, but that’s not in the cards for me just yet—spent too much money on avocado toast, I guess! (Kidding!)
Whether you're a fan of tiny homes, looking to downsize, or just making the most of apartment living like me, here are some of my favorite space-saving tips to help you transform your home!
Use Vertical Space – Shelves, wall-mounted storage, and hanging organizers free up floor space while adding character to your walls. Think floating bookshelves, pegboards, or stylish hooks—practical and cute!
Multi-Use Furniture – Look for pieces that serve more than one function, like a bed with built-in storage, a fold-out desk, or an ottoman that doubles as a storage bin. If you follow us on social media, you’ve probably already seen this ottoman, but I just think it’s too cute and functional not to highlight again!
Hidden Storage – Under-bed storage, hanging closet organizers, and over-the-door racks are game-changers. I recently picked up some baskets from Rug & Home, and now the space under my bed is actually organized instead of a chaotic pile of random things.
Foldable & Stackable Items – Collapsible furniture, nesting tables, and stackable storage bins maximize space without adding clutter. Functional and cool!
Mirrors Work Wonders – Strategically placing mirrors makes a space feel larger and reflects natural light. I originally put one in my living room for this reason, but now I also use it for last-minute outfit checks before heading out the door!
Light Colors– Lighter walls and furniture can make a small space feel airy and light. Plus, throw in a fun pattern or two and it’ll make your space feel like a whole new world. This chair, for example, is my dream purchase—cute, playful, and perfect for a small space!
Let There Be Light – Layer lighting with lamps, LED strips, and under-cabinet lighting to brighten up your home. Personally, I’m a huge fan of using multiple warm-toned lamps instead of harsh overhead lighting—it makes everything feel so much cozier.
Get Creative in the Kitchen – Small kitchens can be tricky, but floating features like magnetic knife racks or overhead pot holders help save counter space. My apartment didn’t come with a pantry and has very limited cabinet space, so I converted a bar cart into my own mobile pantry—food on the go, but at home.
Clean Regularly – In small spaces, every inch counts. If your floor is covered with laundry, stray shoes, or that recycling pile you swear you’ll take out soon (guilty), your space will feel even smaller. But it’s not just about freeing up floor space—keeping things tidy makes your home feel more open, inviting, and comfortable. A cluttered room can feel chaotic and cramped, while a clean, organized space instantly feels more relaxing and enjoyable to spend time in.
Use Rugs to Define Spaces – Every apartment I’ve lived in has had an open floor plan where the kitchen, dining area, and living room seamlessly blend together. Adding rugs has been almost magical in transforming the space—instantly creating definition between areas and making everything feel more intentional and inviting. It’s such a simple change, but it brings so much warmth and personality to a room!
Hooks Everywhere – Wall hooks are lifesavers for coats, bags, keys, and anything else you need to grab on the go. At the Asheville Rug & Home location, we have these rattan hooks that are as stylish as they are functional. They were a lifesaver during the colder months, giving our winter coats a place to hang out instead of piling up on chairs
Rolling Carts for Extra Storage – I know I already mentioned my bar cart pantry, but rolling storage is amazing in any room! I also use a mobile shelf in my bathroom for my makeup and skincare—it makes getting ready so much easier since I can wheel it to wherever I need it. Plus, it frees up space by being vertical!
Living in a small space doesn’t mean sacrificing style or functionality—it’s an opportunity to get a little extra creative. Whether it’s maximizing storage, using light to open up your space, or finding multi-functional furniture, there are countless ways to make your home work for you.
And while I still dream of owning a mansion one day, I have to admit—I’m pretty thankful for my small space. Besides, decorating and hauling furniture into a giant house sounds like a massive chore that I’m definitely not ready for yet. So for now, I’ll stick with my apartment and find joy in the little things.
